Randall Bell has been a police officer with the Vancouver Police Department for 20 years. Currently he is a Sergeant and Team Leader in the Emergency Response Team (SWAT). During his policing career he has earned ten Department commendations including Police Officer of the Year (1992) and The Chief Constable's Award of Valour (2010).
Randall played high school basketball at Port Coquitlam Secondary in 1986 where he helped his Ravens to the B.C. High School Championship tournament for the first time in 27 years. During that time he was also a goaltender for a local junior hockey team. Randall went on to study criminology at Simon Fraser University while playing college football for the Clansmen.
Randall has been involved with the Night Hoops program since the 2002-2003 season and has served on the Board of Directors since that time. Randall and other members of the Vancouver Police basketball team were drawn to the program because it supported the goals of the Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) and the V.P.D. basketball team: "To promote teamwork, sportsmanship, camaraderie, physical fitness and fun through the game of basketball. It is our goal to show youth there is an alternative to violence, drugs and gangs". The purpose of being involved in Night Hoops is to teach life skills and provide a safe environment for kids to play basketball. Ultimately it is the kids who inspire us by showing their determination and character on the court, and in life, no matter what adversity they face.
