Years with Nighthoops: This is my first year with night hoops

Position with Night Hoops: Board Member, looking after coaching development

Occupation: High School Teacher (P.E. and Social Studies) at RC Palmer Secondary School. I have also taught Human Kinetics courses at UBC

I graduated from Magee High School in Vancouver and got a degree in Physical Education (1998) and a degree in Education (1999) from UBC. I also have a Masters in Education (2004) from the University of Phoenix. I have been coaching basketball for 28 years (since I was 16 years old). I have coached at all levels including senior boys at Magee High School (1985 to 1990), McNair High School (1990 to 2000) and at RC Palmer High School (2005 to present). I have also coached College men’s basketball at Capilano University (1999 to 2009). I was an assistant coach on the Canadian Men’s National Team under Jay Triano from 2000 to 2004. I have also been very active coaching assorted BC U17 Provincial Teams (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2006, 2007, 2008, & 2009). Presently I am in charge of The Boys Greater Vancouver Regional Training Center for Basketball BC which are training sessions for the top boys aged 12 to 17 in the Lower Mainland. I also enjoy golfing and playing poker and I have competed in the World Series of Poker in 1999 and 2006.

I am excited about getting involved with Nighthoops as I believe it provides a great opportunity for young people. I have worked with at-risk youth throughout my teaching and coaching career and I have always found it very satisfying. Basketball is a great tool to help young people learn about responsibility, teamwork and other very important life skills and I believe Nighthoops is a great way to get kids involved in a positive activity.
